getanglede portretten / tangled portraits

Eind 2013 wilde ik voor mijn moeders 70ste verjaardag (in januari 2014) een getangled portret tekenen. Mijn zwager had mooie portretfoto's gemaakt tijdens een gezamenlijk weekend, dus aan hem de vraag gesteld of hij een mooie foto had. Ja, dat had hij.

At the end of 2013 I wanted to tangle a portrait of my mother because of het 70th birthday (January 2014). My brother-in-law made very beautiful portrait photo's during a weekend with the whole family, so I asked him if he had a nice picture of her. Yes, he had.

Ik heb de foto uitgedraaid op A3-formaat zoals ik 'm wilde tanglen en de overtrek-methode van Leonardo da Vinci toegepast. Dat is:

-   gaatjes prikken langs belangrijke lijnen in het gezicht (en de kleren)

-   fotoafdruk met gaatjes op een leeg blad leggen

-   met potlood de gaatjes als stippen overbrengen op het witte papier

-   de stippen met potloodlijnen verbinden tot het uiteindelijk gezicht.

I printed the picture in A3 size, the size I wanted to tangle it and used the coping method of Leonardo da Vinci. That is:

- make holes along the most important lines of the face (and clothing)

- put the dotted print on top of an empty piece of paper

- with pencil I drew every hole on the white paper underneath

- I then drew a line through the dots to make the face.

De volgende stap was patronen tekenen met de verschillende fineliners: zwarte Micron 01 (het haar), huidskleur roze, rood en paars (Stabilo fineliners .88, rood ook met de Micron 01 voor de mond). Deze laatste twee zijn de favoriete kleuren van mijn moeder. Next step was to draw patterns with the various fineliners: black Micron 01 (hair), skin tone pink, red and purple (Stabilo fineliners .88, red also with Micron 01 for the mouth). These last two are the favourite colours of my mom.

Helaas stopte het werk aan dit portret in januari door mijn flinke winterdepressie. Daarna vroeg mijn reguliere werk ook veel aandacht om weer op te pakken, dus het tekenen kwam even op een lager pitje te staan. Unfortunately I stopped working at this portrait in January due to my severe winterdepression. After that my regular work asked much attention too, so drawing wasn't the thing that I did first.

Die 70ste verjaardag haalde ik dus niet. Toch kwam er nog een ander moment waarop ik één of beter gezegd 2 portretten kon (af-)maken: Mijn ouders waren in maart 45 jaar getrouwd! Dat was een goede reden om het werk weer op te pakken en aan dezelfde zwager ook een foto van mijn vader te vragen. I didn't make the 70th birthday. But another event was coming for which I could do the portraits or I should better say 2 portraits: My parents would be married for 45 years in March! That was a very good reason to pick up drawing again at the same portrait, but also to ask my brother-in-law for a picture of my father.

Dus met goede moed heb ik het portret van mijn moeder verder getangled op de achtergrond na en begonnen met dat van mijn vader: So I went on tangling the portrait of my mother and started to make my father's.

Ook deze op dezelfde manier overgetrokken (zie foto hierboven voor de achterzijde). Daarna dezelfde tangles op dezelfde plek in het gezicht en zo mogelijk ook in de kleding toegepast. Alleen de kleuren zijn anders: Sepia en bruin voor het haar (Micron 01), huidskleur roze, bruin en rood (Stabilo fineliners .88). Ook deze laatste twee zijn weer de favoriete kleuren van mijn vader (ooit door hem gezegd tegen mijn kinderen). In the same way I copied my father's portrait (see picture above for the backsite). Then I tangled the same patterns on the same parts of the face and where possible also in the cloting. Only I used different colours: Sepia and brown for the hair (Micron 01), skin tone pink, brown and red (Stabilo fineliners .88). These last two are the favourite colours of my father (he mentioned once to my children).

In het weekend dat we het 45 jarig huwelijk vierden heb ik de beide portretten een bijna gelijke achtergrond gegeven met de tangle Partay in hun eigen favoriete kleuren én met het getal 45 in beider werk én de leeftijd van beiden erbij, maar wel zo dat het niet opvalt ;-) natuulijk.

Ze vonden het beiden (na even gewend te zijn aan de afbeelding) beiden mooi en apart :-) Daar was ik blij mee.
In the weekend we celebrated their 45 years of marriage I tangled both portraits to finish them with equal background with the tangle Partay in their own favourite colours wíth the number 45 ánd their age, but these last numbers I have written so that it isn't to be see to clearly ;-) ofcourse.
They both (after getting used seeing their portrait tangled) thought the portraits were beautiful and different :-) I was happy with that.

workshop Zentangle Basis 106 - 15 maart 2014

Komende zaterdag 15 maart 2014 is er weer een Zentangle Basis 106 workshop in Gouda van 10.00 tot 12.00 uur.

Je krijgt in deze workshop de basis uitgelegd van Zentangle en natuurlijk ga je veel tekenen. Je krijgt de materialen waar je in de workshop mee gewerkt hebt mee naar huis. Hierbij krijg je ook een aantal extra dingen, zodat je thuis ook lekker aan de slag kunt.


Kosten 25 euro per persoon, inclusief koffie/thee/warme chocolademelk en een tussendoortje. De workshop is geschikt voor personen van '8 tot 108 jaar', graag bij aanmelden aangeven of er kinderen/tieners bij zijn.

oh ja, dit is ook weer een stempelafdruk van de 'vloerfoto' - een oranje papier deze keer. Met heel veel verschillende Sakura pennen en fineliners, ook Stabilo.

oh yes, again a stamp print from the 'picture of the floor' - an orange paper this time. With many different Sakura pens and fineliners, also Stabilo.

Stempelen met Zentangle / Stamps with Zentangle

In de kerstvakantie wilde ik met 2 van onze kinderen weer eens stempelen. Ik nam 'natuurlijk' de stempels van http://elefantangle.blogspot.nl/2013/03/stempel-stappen-stamps-steps-2.html erbij. Naast op wit papier te stempelen bedacht ik me dat het vast ook wel een apart effect zou zijn als ik op gekleurd papier zou werken. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Dit werden vrolijke prints. Op de foto zie je al het gestempelde materiaal naast elkaar gelegd op onze vloer.

In the Christmas hollidays I wanted to stamp with 2 of our kids. Of course I took the stamps of  http://elefantangle.blogspot.nl/2013/03/stempel-stappen-stamps-steps-2.html for this. Next to making prints on white paper I thought it would be a nice effect when I use the stamps on coloured paper. And I did. These became happy coloured prints. In the picture you see them laying next to each other on the floor spreaded.

Naast het stempelen met de Big&Juicy en een ander merk kleurige stempelkussens, met zwarte en bruine watervaste inkt, bedacht ik me dat ik de stempels ook vast wel in kon kleuren met een viltstift. Dit werden mijn Spectrum Noir alcoholmarkers. Zo kon ik ook meerkleuren-afdrukken maken :-) én delen wit laten. Next to stamping using my Big&Juicy, some other brand with different colour stamp pads, my waterproof brown and black stamp pads, I thought it would be nice too if I coloured the stamps with feltpens. Instead of felt pens I took my Spectrum Noir alcohol markers. So I could make Multi coloured prints too :-) ánd leave parts white.

Het is ondertussen een week geleden dat we gestempeld hebben en ik heb ondertussen 2 afdrukken ingekleurd en getangled. Hiervoor heb ik mijn nieuwe uitgebreide set Gelly Roll gelpennen van Sakura voor gebruikt. Wat een diverse set pennen is dat! Met en zonder glitter, maan'bleke' kleuren, Metallic en ook gouden en zilveren gelpennen met een gekleurde rand. Deze laatste worden "Schaduw" gelpennen genoemd. Vergroot de foto hier rechts door erop te klikken. Ik hoop dat ook dit laatste zichtbaar zal zijn. It is a week ago since we stamped and I tangled and coloured now 2 prints. For this I used my extended set of Gelly Roll gelpens of Sakura.. What a diversity it has! With and without sparkles, pale Moonlight colours, Metallic and also golden and silver gelpens with a coloured edge. These last ones are called 'Shadow' pens. Enlarge the picture with the pens. I hope the last ones I mentioned are to be seen.

Ik koos eerst voor een zalmkleurig blad met een stempelafdruk. Op de vloerfoto midden boven. Eerst tanglede ik Atorm met de bruine Micron 005. Daarna Bumps met roze en oranje Micron 01. Daarna tekende ik met de sepia Micron 01 de tangle Beads. De Bumps heb ik verder ingekleurd met roze en oranje kleurpotloden van Bruynzeel. De Beadlines in het midden heb ik in vakjes om en om ingekleurd met een huidskleurige kleurpotlood en aan weerszijden van de Beadlines lijnen heb ik met bruine kleurpotlood en witte krijtpotlood een schaduwrand en highlight te geven. First I  chose a salmon coloured page with a stamp print. On the 'floor' picture found top middle. First I tangled Atorm with the Brown Micron 005. After that I tangled Bumps with pink and orange Micron 01. Last came Beadlines with the sepia Micron 01. The Bumps I coloured with pink and orange colourpencils of Bruynzeel. The Beads I coloured on both sides of the lines of Beadlines with brown on one side and white on the other side of the line. Brown for the shade and white for a highlight.

De tweede stempelafdruk die ik koos, was het blauwe blad met zwarte stempelafdruk. Ik had knallende koppijn door een lichte vorm van voorhoofdsontsteking. Ik begon met de witte klassieke gelpen van Gelly Roll en een bleke groen van Sakura's Gelly Roll Moonlight. Kelley Kelly had een nieuw patroon Batumber ontwikkeld en die wilde ik wel uitproberen. Ik begon het patroon met de witte en de vormen die het patroon vulde deed ik met de bleek-groene. The second print I chose, was the bright blue paper with black ink-print. I was suffering from a severe headache because of a minor forehead cavity inflammation. I started with a white Classic Gelly Roll and the pale green Moonlight Gelly Roll of Sakura. Kelley Kelly developed a new tangle called Batumber and I wanted to try that. I started the pattern with white bonds and filled it with pale green oval shapes.

De volgende dag ging ik verder en pakte de zwarte Metallic en maakte het patroon Bellaposa uit het boek "Yoga for the Brain" van Sandy Steen Bartholomew Steen - veruit mijn favoriete tangle boek (!!!) - in de overgebleven langwerpige vakjes. De buitenste lege vakjes vulde ik met delen van hetzelfde patroon. De banden van Batumber lichtte ik op met het witte krijtpotlood en de vullingen kleurde ik in met een donkergroen potlood van Bruynzeel. Op de foto links zie je de patronen niet zo best, maar op de scan rechts zijn alle patronen heel goed te zien.

Next day I went on an took my black Metallic Gelly Roll and in the stretched spaces I  made the tangle Bellaposa from Sandy Steen Bartholomers's Yoga for the Brain - my favourite tangle book (!!!). The remaining areas on the outside  filled with parts of the same pattern. The bonds of Batumber I made it lighter with my white charcoal pencil and the Batumber oval shapes I darkened with a dark green pencil of Bruynzeel. On the picture at the left side you cannot see the tangles that good, you can see them better on the scan on the right side.



Mijn hoofdpijn is de loop van de dagen gezakt, mijn verhoging zakt langzaam. Als ik door mag tekenen, zal ook dat vast wel beter gaan worden. My headache is getting less severe now in the couple of days, my temperature is slowly getting more to normal. As long I can draw the next few days, that'll  get better too.

kerstkaarten maken / making Christmas cards

In de laatste les (op maandag en dinsdag) voor de Kerstvakantie laat ik altijd kerstkaarten maken. Afgelopen jaren was dat altijd een pop-up kerstboom, maar dit jaar wilde ik met de leerlingen tangelen. Dus ik heb een aantal sets met sjablonen (na-) gemaakt en meegenomen, zodat ik per groepje leerlingen een aantal verschillende sjablonen had: kerstballen, kerstbomen, kertstbellen, sterren en hulstbladeren. In the last lesson (on Monday and Tuesday) before the Christmas hollidays I always let the students make their own Christmas cards. In the previous years I always thaught them a pop-up Christmas Tree, but this year I wanted to tangle. So I made a couple of sets of stencils (some I copied) and took them with me, so the students could choose in the groups where they sit from Christmas balls, Christmas bells, Christmas trees, stars and holly.

Mijn kaart met het rendiertje had ik als voorbeeld meegenomen. In de eerste les heb ik de gestyleerde kerstboom-kaart gemaakt. De volgorde waarin ik de leerlingen liet werken was:
My card with the reindeer I took with me as an example.  In the first lesson I made the styled Christmas tree card. The student had to follow these directions:

1. strook knutselkarton (ca 10 x 20 cm) door de helft vouwen. De kaart werd zo 10 x 10 cm. A piece of cardboard (approx. 10 x 20 cm = approx. 4 x 8 inch)
2. sjabloon kiezen Choose a stencil
3. sjabloon met potlood overtrekken op de buitenzijde van de kaart draw the inline or outline of the stencil with pencil
4. 4 punten met potlood bij de hoeken van de kaart zetten 4 dots with pencil at the corners of the card
5. een kader tekenen met potlood draw the border with pencil
6. het vlak binnen het kader in 3 delen verdelen (horizontaal of schuin als het sjabloon schuin op de kaart was overgenomen). De 2 lijnen van de vlakverdeling mochten door het figuur heen gaan. Divide the area within the border in 3 parts (horizontal or diagonal depending the placing of the stencil). The 2 lines may cross the picture made but also go behind.
7. Een pen pakken of fineliner en patronen natekenen van het bord in elk van de 3 vlakken één patroon: Knightbridge, Msst en Quipple of Printemps. Pick up the pen or fineliner and draw the patterns from the example made on the schoolboard in each section one pattern: Knightbridge, Msst and Quipple or Printemps.
8. Schaduwen met potlood - om in Zentangle stijl te blijven. Make the shade with pencil - to keep up the Zentangle style.
9. Naar wens inkleuren of op een andere manier verfraaien Then colour or embellish it in their own way.
10. én natuurlijk een wens en afzender erin schrijven. ánd ofcourse put a wish inside and the name of the sender.

Ik had een aantal gouden, koperen en zilveren viltstiften, pennen en potloden meegenomen die onder 'zware bewaking' geleend mochten worden. I took with me a few golden, silver and copper feltpens, pens and pencils which could be used under 'strict supervision'.
De leerlingen gingen lekker aan de slag en daardoor kon ik ook genieten! De meeste leerlingen maakten meer dan 2 kaarten. Over productie draaien gesproken ;-) Van de schoollessen heb ik geen foto's gemaakt, maar.... The student worked good so I could enjoy their work and mine! Most of the students made more than 2 cards. Speeking of production ;-) I didn't take any pictures of the schoolwork, but ....

Deze zelfde kerstkaart-workshop heb ik op de erop volgende woensdag - tijdens Open Kerk-tijd - ook aan een aantal bezoekers uitgelegd en ook zij gingen zeer enthousiast aan de slag. De tekenspullen die ik had meegenomen: stempel-stiften (Colour Express Bruynzeel-Sakura), Pigma pennen 05 (Sakura), HB potloden, Stabilo Fineliners, kleurpotloden en zilveren, gouden en koperen stiften (Sakura), gelpennen (Hybrid gel) en potloden. The gear to draw with I took with me: stamp-pens (Colour Express Bruynzeel-Sakura), Pigma pens 05 (Sakura), HB pencils, Stabilo Fineliners, colour pencils and silver, golden and copper markers (Sakura), gelpens (Hybrid Gel) and pencils.

De kaart van Marjan leek geïnspireerd te zijn op het Kerstevangelie van Johannes, dus daar werd rap de tekst bijgezocht:

Johannes 1, vers 5: Het licht schijnt in de duisternis en de duisternis heeft het niet in haar macht gekregen. Marjan's card seemed to be inspired by the Christmas gospel of John, so quickly the line was  found (translated by me):

John 1, verse 5: The light shines in the darkness and the darkness couldn't conquer it.

Journal around the world

Karen Izzi opperde het idee om een Art Journal rond te sturen langs al haar Facebook vrienden, meerendeels tanglelaars. Haar eerste Journal kwam (als vierde op rij) bij mij langs. Karen Izzi came with the idea to send an Art Journal round the world to all her Facebook friends, mostly tangler. Her first Journal came (as fourth in a row) to me.

Het idee van een thema kwam tijdens een kerkdienst toen ik het schrift net thuis had ontvangen. Ik wilde het de zin "Love Life, Live Love" (vertaling: Heb het Leven Lief en Leef de Liefde) meegeven. The sunday after the booklet came to my place the idea of a theme came to me during a service in church. I wanted to give it the line "Love Life, Live Love" (translated with more words, otherwise it is not readable in Dutch).

Ik heb als eerste een boeksel met monotangle Verve gemaakt. Dat was in die tijd een uitdaging van Roy E. Stauffer.
Dit boeksel en andere verwerkingen heb ik toen op een achtergrond van verschillende stukken inpakpapier geplakt. Natuurlijk ben ik wel zo eigenwijs er ook een verwerking voor mezelf van achter te houden, dus ik heb twee 'spreads' gemaakt. Een nederlandse in mijn eigen Art Journal én een engels-talige in de rondreizende Journal. First I made an Altered Text-piece with the monotangle Verve. That was at that time a challenge by Roy E. Stauffer. This Altered Text and other ways to be creative with words I stuck to a background of present packing paper. Ofcourse I am so stubborn to have one 'copy' for myself, so I made two spreads. One Dutch in my  own Art Journal and one English version for the traveling Journal.

De klaprozen rechtsonder op beide 'spreads' heb ik bloemvorm losgeknipt uit het papier en met één stuk laten zitten aan de stengel. Hierachter zitten foamstickers om het een 3D-effect mee te geven. The Poppy under and right on every spread I cut more or less from the page but left it tied to the stalk. Behind it I stuck foampads to give it a 3D-effect.

De manier om de woorden Live, Life, Love in de ene Journal en de woorden Liefde, Leven, Leef en Lief in de andere Journal heb ik op Pop-Art-geïnspireerde manier verwerkt. The way to present the words Love, Life and Love in the one Journal and the words Liefde, Leven, Leef and Lief in the other Journal I did it in a Pop-Art inspired way.
In het engels-talige hart in het vierkant met strikje zit ook het effect van afstoten met behulp van een witte gel- (of glaze-) pen. Hierin heb ik mijn Letraset aquamarkers gebruikt. In the English heart in the square with a tied ribbon I also used the effect of resisting with a white gel (or glaze) pen. In this I used my Letraset Aquamarkers.
In het Nederlands-talige hart heb ik mijn Stabilo fineliners gebruikt en op de pagina een witte Sakura Caligrapher - een Kalligrafiepen. In the Dutch heart I used my Stabilo fineliners and on the page my white Sakura Calligrapher - a calligraphy pen.

Heh heh, nu heb ik eindelijk ook deze reizende Art Journal beschreven. Het was al van 5 juni! Dat is wel erg lang geleden ;-)
Finaly I also made a blog post about the traveling Art Journal. It was way back of june 5th. That is really a long time ago ;-)
